beach house - terengganu

2012
This was a challenging commission to design a beach house that could be locked down during the monsoon season each year.  The resulting form was an inward-looking house, with the living wing and bedrooms opening onto a central swimming pool and deck.  Oriented towards the sea and beach, the east elevation would also be the most battered during monsoon.  Our solution was to create a series of sliding screens across the width of the house, which would slide and stack when the owners were in residence, opening up the entire house to the sea view.  The screens would close like a shield during the monsoon months.  The language of the large screens then became the motif of enclosure for the rest of the tropical house.
